The club offers training and qualifications for all age groups and abilities. Most of the training carried out by SLSGB is within our clubs by volunteers, who give up their time to qualify, update and teach their fellow club members.
Nippers begin taking qualifications in beach safety and surf skills from the age of 7. The Nipper Award scheme provides a fun based education package with the express aim of preventing loss of life or injury in addition to teaching the necessary skills to assist those in difficulty. The scheme is a progressive system, which encourages the Nippers to work through awards, the sea and coastline can be dangerous and so the children are first taught in a controlled environment such as a swimming pool. Full details of the scheme can be downloaded here.
The club also offers the NARS beach life guard award. This can be taken over the course of a season at the club, or is offered as an intensive week long course. This course is not for the faint hearted, the training involves running, swimming, rescuing and assisting casualties through the surf zone and up the beach using rescue boards and rescue tubes. The course also covers Lifeguard and First Aid theory, Basic life support and spinal management. Candidates must be over 16 years of age, physically fit and able to swim 400 metres in under seven minutes, thirty seconds for the NaRS Lifeguard Award. Those taking the course must be club members.
